  • The Art of Evangelism

    Guy Kawasaki
    16 Apr 2014 | 8:17 am
A long time ago I was a revolutionary at Apple. My job title was “software evangelist.” My responsibility was to evangelize Macintosh to software developers. Later my title was “chief evangelist,” and my responsibility was to evangelize Macintosh to anyone who wanted to increase productivity and creativity. Post Apple, I’ve been many things: author, speaker, entrepreneur, venture capitalist, advisor, and father, but I’ve never used the title “chief evangelist” until today. This is because the title only works if your product can change the world—or at least a significant…

There are great “Event” industry blogs for every kind of person and need and question and perspective out there, but when I read, I look for things that will either teach me something or tell me something that relaxes, focuses and energizes me. Working in the event planning industry for the past decade, I’ve learned that event planning is really about two things. #1 – It’s about having a hands on, can do-attitude to tasks and challenges; simplicity is complex and a beautiful smooth event is about being able to think about even the smallest details and do my homework to make sure…

Are folks seriously debating which car is more aspirational… the Cadillac ELR or the Ford C-Max Energi? Let’s just agree that two teams of “mad men” just got our collective goat. Glued to TV coverage of the Olympics a few weeks ago? You might have spotted an obnoxiously brilliant commercial from Cadillac. The “Poolside” spot features the appropriately-casted Neil McDonough as he waxes unapologetically about “American exceptionalism” and how that translates into his wealthy lifestyle. And that he deserves all of it. It’s obnoxious.

Not only did I listen to #7 UMass lose to #10 Saint Louis 51-46… I streamed said broadcast from my office back in Amherst, MA! Anyway, it was a modest little Windows server running RealAudio. I wish I had a photo of this, but I kid you not… the audio signal came from an old analog stereo receiver tuned to UMass’ own WMUA radio. The dusty thing was perched atop the server box. I can’t even remember how I made the connection to the…

Send to Kindle The other day I was having a conversation with a friend who was asking me about the topics that I enjoy speaking on, and one of my responses was that I like to speak about the concept of community. I was then asked what it was that I liked about the idea of community. I paused, and then replied with something along the lines of: “Thank you for asking me that, because it really makes me think about these things; the things that are important to me.” I spend my days working from home, dealing with clients, and communicating mostly with other marketers. Send to KindleIt’s happened again. And yet again. It’s not something most people notice, which is exactly why we should be concerned. But every time it happens, it drives me nuts. I went to a website to read an article that sounded interesting, and it was. It described a new online tool that I was interested in trying out, and when I clicked on the link to take me to the website for the tool, it didn’t open up in a new tab. Instead, it went directly from the article I was in the midst of reading, to the new website, all in the same tab. Why is this a problem, you ask? Well,…

Send to Kindle While it’s long overdue, I’ve finally gotten around to reading a book one of my friends wrote last year. The book, The Slaves Have Names: Ancestors of My Home, was written by my friend Andi Cumbo-Floyd. Andi grew up on a Virginia farm, and has since gone back and researched the histories of the slaves who worked on that farm, doing the best she can to piece together their stories and present them in a compelling way. She succeeds at this, and I’m finding it hard to put the book down, as she delicately and carefully reveals their names and stories to us.

It's a question that we are constantly asked by clients - an Application or Mobile Website? At Vivo Group, we believe that the choice is company and goal specific. It is a topic of much debate, the fact that users are increasingly choosing to turn to their mobile device (be it smartphones or tablets) as the first point of call to access information. As such, we strongly believe that all information should be converted to suit the changing landscape and host information the way that clients wish to access it. That being said, it is fundamental that a mobile application, or site be…

Each day I speak with potential new clients about their current websites and what can be done to increase the number of leads their sites generate.   As we begin to discuss building their new custom WordPress site, I normally have to have a good thirty minute conversation with them around the importance of having call to actions on their home page, and above the fold.  For example, if you are a real estate agent, the most important thing to have on your home page is the ability for a potential lead to search the current homes for sale in your area.  Therefore, when I visit your site, I…

First, off, Happy New Year!  I know, it’s been a while since I have written new content here.  The past few months have been extremely busy for me with building new custom WordPress sites for clients, speaking engagements, holidays, and moving. While I haven’t had that much time for generating new content, I have however spent a ton of time interacting with others and observing things from a distance across the social networks.  One thing I started to notice over the past few weeks is the way some people share on social networks versus in real life. From the first piece of content that you write to the last piece of content you write (presumably this will be your masterpiece), you’ve had the problem of distribution. No matter how great or how insanely relevant your insights may be, if nobody reads them it is frustrating, or even worse could hurt your business. Your fans will presumably help you sometimes. Your coworkers will presumably support you sometimes. Your friends and family will presumably support you sometimes. These are variable. Your distribution should be constant. This video explains how to configure bitly’s…
  • By the numbers: Does Facebook NEED to filter content?

    Jim Dougherty
    5 Apr 2014 | 8:50 am
Last week, Eat24 sent Facebook a well publicized “break-up” letter.  This happened around the same that AdWeek revealed Facebook’s strategy to squeeze Page reach to 1% in the immediate future. Facebook Communications Director Brendan McCormick responded in kind to Eat24 with a snarky Facebook reply, making three (implied) assertions: 1. There is too much content on Facebook for users to sort through. 2. Because there is too much content on Facebook, it is incumbent upon Facebook to filter it. 3. Facebook doesn’t believe that users want to see Page content in their…

“That’s so ratchet. That girl is such a fake model. She definitely bought all her Instagram followers.” – “#SELFIE” by the chainsmokers I was reading Politico the other day and the headline read “Romney blames Clinton for something or another” (paraphrasing), and sometime afterwards I read about Facebook decreasing Page reach to around 1%. While these two events may not seem related at first glance, for me each calls into question the value of fake social followers. More specifically, I suspect that fake followers and fans may be more valuable…

There are a lot of posts that discuss which WordPress plugins you absolutely must use. It’s awesome to think that you can add cool features to your site with the click of a button for free. (or .com to a limited extent) leaves you like a kid in a candy store. What people don’t share about WordPress plugins is that they oftentimes take a long time to load. Google doesn’t like longer load time, and the reason is pretty intuitive: READERS don’t like a longer load time. We make a lot of unnecessary concessions to Google irrationally hoping they will direct…

If you aren’t aware of Prince Joffrey’s sudden death by now, you probably still don’t know how “Inception” ended. (Hint: It was all a dream.) There are many reasons to be thankful to “Game of Thrones.” Never before have terms like “Dothraki queen” and “Valyrian steel” been acceptable outside of a “World of Warcraft” forum.
  • New Lawsuit from Ex-Maker Employee Seeks to Unwind Disney-Maker Merger

    Alan Van
    18 Apr 2014 | 4:40 pm
Another day, another Maker lawsuit. Andy Faberlle, a former director of partnerships for the Maker Studios from April 2011 to Aug. 2013, has filed a lawsuit seeking to have Disney’s acquisition of the Culver City MCN “unwound.” Faberlle follows in the footsteps of Maker Studios ex-CEO Danny Zappin and three other former executives who filed suit last week in order to delay the merger. Their injunction request was denied by a Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, and Maker’s board approved the Disney deal on Tuesday. Andy Faberlle In Faberlle’s suit, he makes…
  • Can You Beat This Easter Peep-Eating Record? For Your Stomach’s Sake, I Hope Not [VIDEO]

    Jeff Klima
    18 Apr 2014 | 8:30 am
Ah, just in time for Easter … One of the worst things on the planet is the Peep. Basically it’s just a neon, chicken-shaped marshmallow, but they ratchet the sugar up by about 1000 percent. Wretched, vile things they are. And that’s why its so terrifically nauseating to see one man suck down 100 of them in less time than it would take me to take one bite and then barf my guts down my shirt. What does this mean for the future of peep-based eating challenges? I don’t want to say we’ve seen its zenith, but I don’t think anybody beats this record. Pimp this Peep vid and then pass it…

But these kids from Avon High do a pretty good job with their single-take lip dub song mashup of 64 cool songs (and 4 shitty ones), so we might as well throw ‘em a scrap. • Highlight Your Company’s Products and Services with LinkedIn’s Showcase Pages

    18 Apr 2014 | 7:35 am
Do you have a LinkedIn Company page for your business? If you do, or if you’ve been thinking about creating one, LinkedIn recently made a big change. The Products and Services tab was deleted within the Company pages, which is annoying to me because my team and I have spent many hours developing those pages for our company as well as for our clients. However, LinkedIn is still offering a way for businesses to highlight certain products and services with something called “Showcase Pages”. Showcase pages allow you to essentially extend your Company page by creating a page that…

But if you’re an accounting firm, meh, not so much. So what can B2B companies do to gain visibility and even clients from social media? Follow the 3 C’s: • Content • Consistency • Continuity Let’s start with content.
  • How to Get Control of Your Website: Why It’s Important for Your Small Business

    6 Feb 2014 | 7:18 am
It happens all too often. A potential client wants us to create a new website, but no one at the company is sure where their current website is hosted. They think it’s hosted by the same person who created their website, but he can’t be found and they don’t know where their login information was filed. Or, the company website is hosted on the personal account of a tech savvy person who used to work there, but he quit a few months ago and doesn’t feel obligated to return their phone calls or emails. And then there’s the even bigger issue of the domain name (the…
  • Why Small Businesses Should Merge Their Google Pages

    8 Jan 2014 | 7:16 am
If you have a local business and most of your customers come from within a 20-mile radius, you need to merge your Google+ Local Page with a Google+ Business Page. If you aren’t sure you have a Google+ Local Page, you are not alone. A while back, Google changed “Google Places” to “Google+ Local”, so if you had previously claimed your Google Places listing, you are on the right track. To determine if you have a Google+ Local page, search for your business name and location in Google. You should see something like this: If your Google listing is missing a bunch of…

  • Facebook and Twitter: Out With the Old, In With the New

    Marissa McNaughton
    16 Apr 2014 | 8:55 am
This is a guest post by Megan Totka, Chief Editor for At the turn of the decade, Facebook and Twitter were the two giants in social media. For all intents and purposes, they still are. Yet back in 2010 (a simpler time for both sites, pre-IPO’s), both sites were generally untapped when it came to ad revenue and mass appeal for small businesses. As both sites continued to grow and shift their scope, all of that quickly changed. The challenges each site faced were essentially different; Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook were out to show that his “social network” was…

It will be easy for some to see this as either a loophole that can be exploited to reach the News Feed or a hard and fast rule about when you should post. This is neither. What I’m sharing here is merely anecdotal based on what I’ve seen recently in my results. It’s a sign that Facebook may have tweaked something. Or it could be an unexplained phenomenon…

  • 8 Canadian Destinations Shining in the Digital World

    Frederic Gonzalo
    13 Apr 2014 | 6:42 am
Having just returned from Toronto where I spoke at Online Revealed Canada, the country’s premier online marketing conference for hospitality and tourism professionals, I thought this would be as good an occasion as any to share how a few Canadian destinations are setting themselves apart in the ever-competitive online travel landscape. According to the latest Canadian DMO Benchmarking Study, conducted by A Couple of Chicks digital agency in Toronto, there are few trailblazers in the country, as we lag behind other international countries in terms of our online mobile presence, for…
  • How Facebook influences… TripAdvisor!

    Frederic Gonzalo
    5 Apr 2014 | 11:17 pm
With Facebook reducing page posts’ organic reach, forcing brand managers to spend more and more in order to maintain a dynamic community on the king of social media, there are many companies outright questioning their presence on Facebook moving forward. In the travel vertical, I even hear some folks say they’d rather invest more time and money on a platform such as TripAdvisor, undoubtedly a key player in the travel decision-making process. It makes sense. Yet, once you take a closer look at how TripAdvisor has evolved in the past 18 months or so, you start realizing a lot of its…
  • Why review sites are a must for travel marketers

In the past, I have shared insights on this blog about how TripAdvisor impacts travel decision-making and even gave hotels, restaurants or attractions 3 tips to rank higher on TripAdvisor. While there are various studies out there about the importance of review sites, including some from Google Travel or independent academic research, many tend to focus either exclusively on the impact on revenues, or on TripAdvisor user behaviors. And some of the more interesting findings also tend to come from TripAdvisor research, whether conducted alone or in partnership with reputable firms such as…
  • Is AirBnB The Next Powerhouse Travel Brand ?

    Frederic Gonzalo
    23 Mar 2014 | 10:47 am
To most people in the general public, AirBnB is the poster child of the sharing economy. It started with a simple concept, nearly six years ago in 2008 : invite people over to your house or apartment, charge a minimal fee for a spare couch, a guest room and sometimes even the whole flat. Connecting property owners and managers directly with customers is at the heart of the sharing economy, also referred by some as peer-to-peer (P2P), or collaborative economy. Today, AirBnB showcases more than 600,000 listed properties across 34,000 cities in 192 countries worldwide. According to a recent Wall…

The iPhone was launched in 2007, less than seven years ago, yet we tend to forget how life was ‘before’ the advent of smartphones. Social media has flipped the power from brands to travelers, with review sites now common and influential in the decision-making process. Not to mention everyday access to increasing amounts of content and services now accessible via tablets and smartphones 24/7, anywhere in the world. So how are hotels embracing the change? MCD recently published the results from a research conducted with 1,000 US travelers, last November 2013. Travelers were evenly…

Survival of the Most Clicked Reality TV has set a funny tone across the globe for survival of the most talented, most skinny, most bitchy, most addicted, most pregnant, most Amish, most mean and more. In journalism, it’s a sad state of affairs that clicks are winning the war in wooing readers in a similar way. Most clicked news stories are now part of the survival series. In our short attention span world, we must be captured and entertained. Then, we click. And those clicks are driving media outlets as they make decisions about news coverage – and how long that news coverage drones on…

Asking for a correction from a reporter who gets it wrong can be a tough assignment. With the nature of online information and clicks driving the nation’s conversation, it must be done. Here’s advice on how to ask and receive a correction  – and what to expect in the war of facts. 1. Make sure your facts are correct. There’s nothing worse than bringing an error to light if you’re even a tad off the mark. Keep emotion and tone out of the request. Even if people are upset by an error, 99.9 percent of errors are made without intent. Intent, of course, triggers…

Local TV sweeps are the few months of the year in TV land when broadcast segments kick into high gear with investigative pieces and consumer segments that are intensely promoted and aggressively marketed by local television outlets. And sweeps start in February. So what’s the fuss? We asked an industry insider and former news director with 23 years of experience in the Indianapolis market to share his take on sweeps. Kevin Finch knows more about local sweeps, and the stories that were generated during those competitive months, than most. He held key positions at three of the four Indy TV…

Why the Fuss Over Words & Grammar? Content. It can make you or break you. It can open a door and slam one in your face. It can lead to revolution or peace making. Dramatic? Maybe so. But on the receiving end of some bad words, messages and grammar assaults lately, I remain committed to words and how those words flow together to tell a story. Some people could not care less. Here’s why they’re wrong. When you receive a piece of direct mail advertising, do you take the sender’s message less seriously if there is a typo in a headline? If your name is misspelled (badly as my name often…

If a media kit makes it harder for me to do my job then, as much as I love them, the sad reality is that they’ll get glossed over. Musicians are an exercise in contradictions: thick skinned and soft hearted. For most bands, creative thinking flows as naturally as the biological imperative to breathe. And even the most difficult math problems are relatively straightforward to solve–once you’ve set them up. The tough part is often at the beginning, and nowhere is this truer than in the realm of businesses. Just like unknown artists, businesses know that once they score their first few “big” contracts, the next big contracts will be easier…

Made famous by “The Wealth of Nations“, the idea that specialization and co-operation could lead to higher-volume, cheaper, and better-quality production was fairly common–and controversial–in the 18th Century. Some 60 odd years earlier Dutch philosopher and economist Bernard Mandeville had written: “No number of Men, when once they enjoy Quiet, and no Man needs to fear his Neighbour, will be long without…

Gone are the days when job hunting is all but a one-sided quest for the greener pasture. The dawn of social media has bridged that gap between employers and the workforce, creating a two-way street where both the potential employer and promising employee meet in the middle. Why is this so? Clearly, social media has leveled the playing field when it comes to the working classes’ access to the best jobs. On the other hand, companies can also easily reach out to a network of individuals ready to provide recommendations for a shortlisted candidate. Not to mention that the exchanges between…

Fast-forward 13 years, and experts determined that, over the course of 2012, 2.5 exabytes of data were created each day (HBR). Before the days when consumers sent over 100K tweets and conducted over 2M Google searches per minute (Domo), brands often relied on mass third-party data and retargeting techniques to fill in…

Ask any successful B2B brand, and it will tell you that the golden thread between its sales and marketing teams is its lead scoring system. According to Marketo, only 25% of new leads are sales ready, and B2B marketers are pros at measuring consumer readiness to buy and nurturing them down the purchase funnel. On average, B2B companies using lead scoring systems increase close rates by 30%, revenue by 18% and revenue per deal by 17% (Eloqua). Despite having the same ultimate goal – sales revenue – B2C companies’ larger volume of customers and highly independent, often automated…

It seems the oldest known “message in a bottle” has been found in the Baltic Sea after over 100 years bobbing aimlessly. Where did Top Stories & Most Recent Go?  Prior to the most recent layout change, March 2014, the drop-down to find “Top Stories” and “Most Recent” filters for the desktop news feed was located to the upper right of the content column.  Once the change went through, you may have noticed it missing.  The drop-down is now located in your LEFT sidebar, just to the right of the word “News Feed” in the little v arrow.  This change isn’t that big of a deal but it can be annoying when you’re trying to locate where it went!  Facebook will…
  • How To Report SMS Text Messages As Spam

Reporting SMSText Spam The FTC is very particular about what defines text spam – and it carries a LOT of rules regarding it’s proper compliance with the SMS marketing law. Since I’ve gotten some spam SMS texts tonight, I thought you may find this useful. “It turns out, many carriers (including the big four US carriers: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile) let you report spam messages by forwarding them to 7726. It won’t necessarily stop the messages from coming to you right away, but like reporting spam in Gmail, it’ll help them filter those messages…

  • Are exhibitions a cost effective form of marketing?

    Mary Thomas
    16 Apr 2014 | 1:48 am
During my nearly six years in business I have only exhibited a handful of times.  The exhibitions I did try were generally badly attended and didn’t lead to much new business. As a result I’ve been highly sceptical of the benefit. However, I do see the benefit (and I enjoy :-)) standing in front of a group of people and talking about social media (it is what I do all the time). Last October, I noticed a call for speakers for the Berkshire Means Business event and immediately volunteered to speak.  Of course I needed to purchase an exhibition stand and thought that I would take…

As of yesterday, brand new Twitter web profiles are live in the Twittersphere. In a few weeks time, the feature reminiscent of Facebook’s profile pages will slowly roll out to everyone. According to Twitter, the redesigned profiles help users “to show the world who they are and express themselves more easily”. Although the Twitter redesign is a welcomed update to the layout, it’s a bit late considering the fast-paced evolution of social networks. From many conversations with CMOs and Marketing VPs, I’ve found there is a fundamental misunderstanding of the difference between the value of digital marketing tactics. There’s a short game (spending) and long game (investing) to getting customers and sales via digital marketing, but most people have no patience or means to justify playing the long game. This presents an opportunity for any company looking for a competitive advantage. The Short Game – Digital Spending The short game is obvious: spending on search, display and promoted posts to drive traffic, visibility and…
