I love a good media kit. I love going deeper into the world of a blogger, seeing what makes them tick, where their readers are loving them and how they are tapping into their community. It’s breathtaking, really. But, there’s a problem. Most media kits stop short of really taking my breath away because they let these very common mistakes get in the way of their WOW factor. If a media kit makes it harder for me to do my job then, as much as I love them, the sad reality is that they’ll get glossed over. Today I want to take you through the most common mistakes I see bloggers…

Bloggers: how often to look at your traffic numbers? What do you look for? Do you ever take a deeper dive to determine cause and effect? Do you notice trends? I just did that… well, for a very specific reason. A blog post I wrote way back in 2009 started the trend I’m about to share. In fact, this trend resulted in a second blog post in 2011. Why all the traffic? Simple. Most of us hate telemarketer calls and worse yet, those calls happen to come during the dinner hour when we’re all resting after a long day. So, since that 2009 blog post, this site has been getting a fair…

A similar level of fervor is spreading across the “Applesphere” as some folks are getting bent out of shape over U2’s latest album appearing FREE in their iTunes accounts. I’m a long-time fan of U2, so I was thrilled at this lovely surprise. And who doesn’t like free? But for some, Apple, like people have longed complained about Facebook, is messing with MY stuff. Edgerank It is fairly well known that search engines have their own special algorithms as per which site results are ranked and displayed to the user, but not a lot of people realise that a similar process works in Facebook as well. Your Facebook page updates are not seen by every fan of your page. Each update has a ‘post view’ number that page managers can see displayed below it, this tells you that out of your say, 10,000 fans only 6,032 people have seen it.

  • 5 reasons why 2015 could be a bad year for LinkedIn.

    Fred McMurray
    13 Jan 2015 | 1:17 pm
I found LinkedIn back in 2003. Back then, unless I was speaking to a tech person, people looked at me strangely when I spoke about LinkedIn. By 2009 people were on LinkedIn to develop business networks that would help them find new jobs,  new employees, referral partners, advice, new clients and even help with customer service. It was a golden age for B2B networking and LinkedIn was the place to be. I myself was rabidly against using non-LinkedIn social media platforms, especially for business. I had the paid account and evangelized about why professionals and organization had to be there.

If you’re a business owner, the last thing you probably want to think about is another item to add to your to-do list. And for many, adding social media to the list can seem nebulous and even pointless. However, if you think of “doing” social media as more of a business presence builder and less of a time waster, you’ll start to reap the benefits that are possible. Because if you think that your business doesn’t need a digital presence, you’re sadly mistaken. Our business has gotten as many good leads from our online presence and the activities we do in…

There are so many theories, so much advice, so many experts that it can be hard to find answers to what you really are looking for. As a marketer and a blogger, I’m always looking out for insights and perspectives on what goes into a well-balanced blog. After all, blogging is core and integral to branding and marketing – both for individuals and businesses. From what I read, 67% marketers created blogs last year, and I know from experience that creating a blog is not significant. Keeping it alive and kicking with right well-balanced fodder is key to success and growth and results. And what better way to understand and appreciate this perspective than with an analogy to our food types – something which we…

There’s been an underlying trend in travel over the past couple of years: the desire to experience destinations like a local. • 2015 Public Relations Adjustment

    Kyle Elyse Niederpruem
    9 Jan 2015 | 7:18 am
Wanted: 2015 Public Relations Adjustment The start of a new year is always a good point to ask your clients – how can I help and what could we be doing differently in public relations? Many people are afraid to ask or even offer new suggestions. People get in ruts and routines when it comes to public relations. And new ideas and strategies can seem daunting, especially if it means more work and a possible risk of (gasp) failure. Here’s why that thinking is wrong and what you should do about it: Provide Context Times change. COEs change, demands change and budgets are revised accordingly.

Thank a Reporter Today When a reporter hits a home run, say so. Comprehensive stories with context are more difficult to report than ever in our nanosecond-obsessed world. Occasionally, just say thanks — for no reason. It’s a tough job, with awful hours and stress. And reporters are often lied to and force fed junk. (I can recount by name everyone who bold-faced lied to me when I worked in a newsroom. You still know who you are.) Provide just what’s needed and no more. No one appreciates a deluge of information unless it’s needed. More isn’t always better. Less is often best. Tweet…

If you haven’t seen “Chef,” the movie, it will be a flick frozen in time for how Twitter works (right now). Jon Favreau’s up and downs as a chef gone viral with a critic rant is pretty spot on. Now, whether a food truck traveling cross country can actually claim a following via a tech savvy 10-year-old using Vines and GPS to create a social media story is another matter. But in the way of the social media story as it happens today, it all seems very plausible. “Chef” is a summer feel good movie with today’s modern twist inserted. How can outsourcing to a digital agency in 2015 become an effective strategy for your business? This is what we are going to attempt to answer on our first article here on the blog for the year 2015. During 2014, we saw walls of doubt among many employers crumbling, their eyes looking expectantly at the horizon of possibilities, at the many more things they can do, for their businesses. We saw this in the statistics, in the way marketers say that increasing sales directly associated with digital marketing campaigns is a top priority in 2014, in the fact that marketers will spend $8.3 billion…

Listening well to conversations will show how genuinely ready you are to engage directly with your customers and how active and open you are in diving into insights that you can use to make decisions for the next campaign to reinforce your brand.       Everyone will take a moment to look at photo or image they almost can’t resist. Mainly for two reasons: they know it won’t take up much of their time and they’re instantly intrigued. The power of images has been around since the days newspapers were able to capture horrific and touching moments, but now we are the creators of those moments. • Storytelling – the 2015 Marketing Trend for Brands Large and Small

    Mike Wolpert
    2 Jan 2015 | 6:41 am
Looking into the marketing crystal ball of 2015, more attention than ever is being directed by major brands to content marketing via social media channels. That’s nothing really new. What is new, however, is the engine behind their social media strategy: Storytelling. As I’ve often said, what’s good enough for a big brand is even better for a small business when we adapt it for our specific needs. Rarely do we want to try to exactly copy a big brand marketing strategy or tactic. However, learning from their grand schemes and big budget investments and making it personal for our…

    20 Nov 2014 | 6:05 am
by Guest Contributor: Cameron Johnson The Internet of Things (IoT) is finally here, and with it has come major changes to the way people do business—from the way they market products to the way they make repeat sales. The old way of marketing relied on customers to be actively engaged with advertising, but the IoT allows businesses to reach out to customers as they brush their teeth or brew a pot of coffee. Not only does the IoT put advertisements more intimately into the lives of consumers, but it also allows businesses to cross-promote products and make automatic repeat sales. A pacemaker…

And once again the media and big brands are crying foul albeit not as loud as in the past. 19 Jan 2015 | 4:30 am
Click, read, buy. Three actions you want your social media fans and followers to take. But they’ll never know how to react if you don’t ask. Incorporating specific conversion tactics can make all the difference in your social media posts. But too often, businesses skip the specifics and instead choose to use a call to action (CTA) that only speaks in generalities. This is a lost opportunity to take a casual fan or follower and convert them into a subscriber or potential client. So, what exactly is a call to action? According to Wikipedia, A call to action, or CTA, is a banner, button, or…

The turkey’s eaten and the tinsel’s down (although we’ll be eating chocolate until June), so it must be time for our annual roundup of UK specific Social Media Statistics. Which sites are doing what as we head into 2015? Who’s winning, who’s losing, who’s just generally losing it?! UK Social Media in 2015 In general, what we’re seeing from many organisations is much less in the way of dismissive “social media is trivial” stuff and a more positive view of whether it’s relevant for professional businesses. This is good news for both us…
  • What’s up with Instagram?

    Kate Rose
    17 Dec 2014 | 3:40 am
Instagram recently announced that the App has passed the 300 million user mark,  making it the world’s second largest social media platform, eclipsing Twitter’s 284 million. Although, to keep things in perspective, it’s still dwarfed by Facebook, which has around 1350 million monthly active users*. What is Instagram doing so right? If Twitter is about reading what’s new in the world, Instagram is about seeing it. That greater immediacy, and the “picture is worth a thousand words” principle, is obviously very powerful and attractive to users. It may also…

    6 Nov 2014 | 7:38 am
All these people would like an ipad. Does that make them potential customers?   Last week, I was sitting in a traffic jam on one of London’s major roads. To my left is a huge development under way, several high rise blocks being clad in shiny glass and steel. And around the outside of the site hoardings, a bright banner advertising off plan sales of the new apartments, and inviting me to “follow {the developer} on Facebook to win an IPad!”. That developer isn’t alone, by any means; most weeks I notice more than one advert offering a similar “bribe”, in…

It’s not having a huge army of Likers. What’s the most…

I just got back from a trip to the South of France, and very lovely it was too, after the first 24 hours. The trip there, though, was pretty much as bad as it gets. Thanks to my friends at Easyjet, with a little help from some bad weather, what should have been a quick 80-minute flight was turned into an almost 12 hour odyssey of discomfort and frustration. At the end of which I helped a number of elderly people unload their cases from a coach, get to their hire cars and find beds for the night, while thinking about how very distressed my own parents would have been in that situation. But by…

Perhaps the problem is not that you don’t have a great product to offer but you don’t know how to properly present it. One of the most important aspects of doing business online, and even offline for that matter, is communication. When you’re communicating with your audience on a regular basis, you’ll find that conversion rates (sales), traffic, and more will sustain your influence overall. Leveraging newsletters and pushing forward content is a good thing, but when the holiday season comes through, you may be tempted to smother your audience a bit. Many retailers get into a mode of communication that unleashes the worst in marketing endeavors, and that could actually be detrimental to your overall reach.

    Patrick Stox
    21 Jan 2015 | 4:00 am
Did you know that Google uses over 200 factors to determine the rank of a website? Google’s algorithm is complex and not only looks at factors they consider important, but also decides how to weight those important factors and what should negatively influence a site’s ranking as well. Google changes it’s algorithm over 500 times a year and runs tests of the algorithm for certain users as well. Inside of the algorithm are different parts that look for specific items. The most well known algorithms looking for specific items are Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, Pigeon, Pirate,…

Content management systems (CMS) can take the stress out of managing your website. If you have a website, you more than likely fit into one of two categories – you either have a static website, which means all of your site updates have to be hard coded using standard web programming techniques or you already have a content management system in place and you can make dynamic page updates on your own. Nowadays, the benefits of building a static website are few and far between. If you have a static site it’s probably time to say goodbye and update to a modern CMS. Here are five…

In fact, it can even be beneficial and healthy in the long run. In short, without competition, how could we ever improve our own ideas and marketing skills or attempt to earn more views? How would we have any incentive to learn more about our field or eagerness to build upon our knowledge? This being said, competition in the marketing field can make ourselves and our…

Mandy Edwards I’m here to tell you something really important… Not every piece you publish on social media has to be epic. Now that that weight is off your shoulder, you can relax. Don’t get me wrong, publishing epic content is great but you can do it every.single.time. No one (or business) is ever 100%. There is no need to stress about publishing epic content every time you hit “post” or “publish”. Good, quality content is always important. It’s what helps you earn respect and a following – even clients. However your audience doesn’t expect perfection with every post.

When you use social media to advance your business goals, you are working to exercise influence, which is defined as the power to get others to do what you ask just because you ask. This type of power was analyzed over 50 years ago by two social psychologists, John French and Bertram Raven, in France. Their 5-part model of social influence is startlingly relevant in today’s social marketing landscape. In order from least useful to most useful in your social media campaigns, the five types of power are: Coercive Power Legitimate Power Reward Power Expert Power Referent Power…

Determining what to write about, where and when to post it, and who to share it with are likely some of the toughest things any content marketer, inbound marketer, or digital community management professional has to deal with. This is all the more difficult considering the fact that running a successful social media campaign usually demands consistent updates. Maintaining an editorial calendar filled with regular or “evergreen” content ideas — including popular holidays and key social media-centric events — definitely helps with the content generation process, but…

Behind every popular blog or social media account, there is a real person (or people). Forgetting this is what results in unsuccessful campaigns or even social media backlash. Anyone with a popular blog, Twitter account, Facebook page or other social media platform has likely been approached by many types of marketers — and most of the time, these pitches fall flat. The key is not only to seek out content creators who are already aligned with your brand message — but to treat them like friends or allies instead of just another cell on your KPI spreadsheet. Influencers are…

Pinterest & Instagram have undeniably become popular visual social platforms among brands and consumers. That is because, we, as humans, are able to process images 60,000 times faster than text and 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual. Marketers, who embrace visual content, see a larger return on investment in terms of more readers, more repins, more leads, more customers and revenue as well. It you would like to get in on the photo sharing action, but don’t have the resources to participate in both, how do you decide between the two? It all depends on who your target…

    Alex Noudelman
    22 Jan 2015 | 10:34 am
It’s very unfortunate, but the death of brick-and-mortar retail stores is approaching and inevitable. For decades, Canadian consumers have been accustomed to traditional retail stores where they could purchase all their clothing, gifts and groceries under one roof. The model, which emerged in the 1960s, is under serious threat now as consumers are opting to do their shopping online: no line ups, no waits for parking spots and no need to get out of bed. A key indicator of this change is the number of retail stores that have exited from the Canadian markets in recent years, citing loss in…
