Most importantly, these inflection points have come to influence what our customers now expect these interactions to be. Digital inflection points have faceted meanings For example, the introduction of YouTube in 2005 was a major inflection point…

  • Why Facebook Will Crush Twitter for Customer Service

    Frederic Gonzalo
    1 Jul 2015 | 4:00 am
I was a late-comer to Twitter. After I opened my account back in January 2009 and tweeted a few times, it when dormant for a year as I failed to see the relevancy of the platform or how to better use it. My epiphany came while attending EyeforTravel’s “Social Media Strategies in Travel” event in March 2010, in San Francisco, hearing various examples of hotels, airlines or destinations engaging with hundreds of thousands travelers and consumers on Twitter. It was then that I also understood Twitter is better used through third-party tools such as Hootsuite ou Tweetdeck,…

From Mary Meeker’s Internet Report to Social Media Examiner’s Marketing Industry Report, many recent findings shed light on up and coming trends that travel brands ought to be paying attention. Here is my humble analysis on the matter. 1. Mobile advertising Earlier this year, I explained why travel brands must connect with mobile travelers. Recent stats all confirm what is more than a fad: mobile is here, it’s not a mere trend but rather a way of life. Yet, advertisers…

Remember the days when one would simply waltz into a travel agency and pick up a couple of brochures, or perhaps spend some time in a bookstore, gazing at travel guides for some remote and exotic destination? Today, 87% of all searches related to travel start online, according to a Google Ipsos MediaCT study published in 2013. This can happen during a free moment at work over a desktop, on-the-go with a smartphone or wifi-enabled handheld device, or perhaps at home with a laptop or digital tablet. It is also a behavior across various traveler segments, from business to leisure and families.

    9 Jan 2015 | 7:18 am
Wanted: 2015 Public Relations Adjustment The start of a new year is always a good point to ask your clients – how can I help and what could we be doing differently in public relations? Many people are afraid to ask or even offer new suggestions. People get in ruts and routines when it comes to public relations. And new ideas and strategies can seem daunting, especially if it means more work and a possible risk of (gasp) failure. Here’s why that thinking is wrong and what you should do about it: Provide Context Times change. COEs change, demands change and budgets are revised accordingly.

Thank a Reporter Today When a reporter hits a home run, say so. Comprehensive stories with context are more difficult to report than ever in our nanosecond-obsessed world. Occasionally, just say thanks — for no reason. It’s a tough job, with awful hours and stress. And reporters are often lied to and force fed junk. (I can recount by name everyone who bold-faced lied to me when I worked in a newsroom. You still know who you are.) Provide just what’s needed and no more. No one appreciates a deluge of information unless it’s needed. More isn’t always better. Less is often best. Tweet…

Pitching matters. How you pitch a blogger could be considered the most crucial part of running a successful blogger outreach offering as a brand or agency. It matters because bloggers are highly relational, time poor entrepreneurs fielding dozens if not hundreds, of emails every day. Like you, they are overwhelmed (and underpaid!) and racing to get through their emails so they can get on with the real work of the day – creating content. The great thing for you is that all this presents you with an opportunity. As someone who has received thousands of pitches from brands and agencies I…

Why? Well, brand and PR managers want to work with people who have some runs on the board, people they can trust to do a good job. Because the world of blogging can be complex, people who don’t live and breathe it quite the same way that bloggers do, can feel overwhelmed…

This is after all the age when long blog posts are no longer the primary ingredient to a successful content marketing. Truth be told, people are drowning with words. They are already overwhelmed with all the information they are exposed to everyday. And, whether you like to admit it or not, text-only content can be bland, dull, and boring. So to spice it up, you can bring visual content into play.

  • What’s really important to consumers?

    30 Jun 2015 | 10:51 am
Marketers are spending a lot of money on social media marketing analytics and, while there are some insights to be gained, the best way to find out what’s really important to consumers is to simply ask them and watch them make purchase decisions. There are those people who are trying to convince marketers that shoppers never leave home without their smartphone and always check for lower prices elsewhere.  That is a canard.  The fact is that over 90% of purchases are often impulse purchases spurred by shelf placement, product design and shelf talkers. OK, I’m talking about…

Marketers are being held accountable for every dollar they spend and “brand building” without bottom line results is seen as a waste of money.  Research reports…

These non-click responses can lag days behind the ad impression and retargeting ads are not always on target as only 2% of respondents had made a purchase because of retargeting ads. On the other hand, 44% of consumers were negatively affected by high frequency retargeting ads.  Consumers…

Mandy Edwards Lately content strategies seem to be everywhere. I have clients adding them to their social marketing plans and I’m working a project based around content analysis.   Let me tell you know – if you are not actively and regularly creating fresh content – and I’m not talking about social media posts – you and your business are missing out. In the age we are in, you have to be constantly creating content.   Okay, social media posts are content, but that’s not what matters. What I’m talking about is content from your website. Blogs. • Why We Do "Fancy Friday"

    Maggie Schneider Huston-Oracle
    2 Jul 2015 | 8:23 am
It started out innocently enough: One person wanted to bring back “Fancy Friday,” a tradition from the pre-acquisition days of the startup Vitrue. Since the dress code was relaxed, they decided to dress up on Fridays. Seems simple, right? It was - in the beginning. One person did it, then a few more joined in, and before we knew what was happening, we were dressed up as pirates. Wait, what? Yes, we’re dressed as pirates. Intentionally. (Shockingly, several people had full pirate costumes in their closets already. But that’s neither here nor there.) How we went from suits to pirate…

In a recent SteamFeed post, I explained why online marketers should use caution when choosing images for their online content. Many business owners, including myself, have learned the hard way that some groups, such as Getty, not only require payment to use their images, they seriously enforce that requirement. If you inadvertently use someone’s image(s) without paying, you will probably end up regretting it. The image owner can – and most likely will – take action against you by either: (1) Sending you a “cease and desist” letter (2) Enforcing a steep fine (3) Requiring you to…

While some people claimed that Google was spot on, others voiced that the targeting was within a 25 mile radius of their actual location. Unfortunately, for others the identified location was thousands of miles from the actual one. More data is needed for proper…

And those are fleeting benefits, unlike the long-term benefits of creating content on your own site. So what about reposting blog content? It would certainly…

Suffice it to say that marketing automation has come a long way thanks to technology. However, technology alone is not the…

Barack Obama is probably the first politician to truly understand the power of social media and to use it in a believable and in-touch way. Previous politician’s attempts to use social media have been one hilarious blunder after another. April 2011 saw the birth of Ed Balls. Not the stout middle-aged politician himself but of something rather more catchy. For at 4:20 pm, April 28, 2011, Ed Balls did something that would change Twitter forever: He accidentally tweeted his own name. This delighted the denizens of Twitter. A new user on the micro-blogging platform, poor Ed was clearly just trying to get to grips with the format, and most likely thought he was searching his own name. Ed valiantly decided to leave his techno-faux pas online and Twitter users quickly began to celebrate with memetic aplomb. The trend went from…

Okay, you’ve got a great product, idea, campaign, whatever. Looks ace, feels ace, and many normal non-marketing-inclined folk are even saying it’s ace. You sit there at the head of a pyramid social stratagems and think to yourself: “My, this is going excellently.” But delivering and understanding the value of your social campaign is never this simple. Glowing analytics reports are great but there’s always more you can be doing to give your successful campaign an extra edge – an edge that really sets it and you apart from the online marketing herd.
  • How sharing bankrolls real journalism

    3 Jun 2015 | 8:55 am
It’s obvious that media is changing. Newspapers are feeling the financial strain and being forced to diversify into making their money online – through cpm banner ads and online subscriptions. Some are better at this than others and the ones who succeed are the ones who understand that online journalism is an entirely different beast to print journalism. This is much simpler to understand that you might think. If a person buys a magazine or a newspaper they are buying a curated, organised thing – what they are going to read has been decided for them. When a person goes online they’re…

With Periscope your viewers can send you hearts and ask you questions while you’re talking. Putting it in…

There are probably a million ways to get to 1000 Facebook page likes, but some of them you want to stay away from. So first I’ll share a few tips on what not to do to get to 1000 Facebook likes. 1. Don’t pay to grow your likes This might sound controversial and although Facebook allows you to target for specific demographics, I have found that it can be hit and miss and you don’t want to attract likers that are never going to engage with your content and are not…

Socialnomics is my new favorite word as I continue to measure the value of the influencer market and its billions of users.  Socialnomics is this fantastic puzzle that operates so incredibly well that increased sales can be traced directly to a certain piece of the campaign. There is tangible value to this social media puzzle. Currency in social media isn’t in dollars or diamonds but the…

The age-old adage, “All publicity is good publicity,” is alive and well.  Even if you or your brand receive negative PR that seems to tarnish your reputation, there is a high likelihood that you are still benefiting from the media coverage.  Do we believe this saying to hold true still today in our every-changing social media landscape? A pattern that any press is good press is evident when we see that the more ridiculed a person is for sharing bold, brash, controversial opinions via social media, the more followers they gain. Take Russell Brand, for example. An icon of the times,…

Humans have been communicating their likes, dislikes and recommending better ways to rub sticks together since…
